Like the original poster I was not offered the choice and just got the error 
message. But when I installed cpio from the command line I was offered the 
choice (and chose tar)

It is not hard to install a package from the command line :
Open a terminal, enter 'su'  (without quotes) to become root user.
Give root password when prompted.
Enter 'urpmi cpio'
Thats it. :-)
