This error, in my experience, is usually caused by setting the UPSCLASS or UPSMODE incorrectly in the apcupsd.conf file. Try setting the UPSMODE to disable and the UPSCLASS to standalone and restart apcupsd to see if you can then check the status. If you can, and still need to share the UPS with other machines via the netserver, you can try to change one at a time to see which settings you need to get it to work. I do have a shared UPS and currently use the sharenet MODE and shareslave/sharemaster settings and mine works fine.
