For data recovery and troubleshooting inaccessible or nonoperational systems,
I created my own custom Live CD using mklivecd from the projects CVS (not the
version included with recent MDK versions) at http://livecd.berlios.de/. You
can also use MDV Move, Knoppix, and other Live CD distributions. Most can be
downloaded as an iso image file, then burned to CD or DVD.

A live CD is an OS on a bootable CD. While it is not specifically a data
recovery tool, it can be used for that purpose. A live CD can also be used to
try out Linux without installing any thing on the computer. The Live CD's
performance will usually be noticeably slower than an installed OS (FYI).

Boot from the live CD. Mount the partition which contains the data you want to
recover. Now you can either copy the data to another partition, or use K3B or
friends to select the data to be recovered and burn to CD or DVD.

HTH,
