Thanks, Anne.

I too have had the problem of 2005LE not switching off the machine.

Adding acpi=on has cured it. I had already tried all the "possible" 
cures!

Of all the distros I have tried, Mandriva2005LE is the only one which 
wouldn't switch the computer off.
