Rosemary, sorry I jumped into this thread kind of late, but below is the
script I run for my sig:

#!/bin/bash
echo "Chris"
echo "Registered Linux User 283774 http://counter.li.org";
STR=$(uptime)
TIME=${STR% user}
RESULT=${TIME%}
echo $RESULT
echo "Mandriva Linux 10.1 Official, kernel $(uname -r)"
echo "~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"

/usr/games/fortune -e

echo "~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"
if [ -p /tmp/xmms-info ] ; then echo "Live - Classic Rock - From Virgin Radio
UK $( grep Title: /tmp/xmms-info | awk -F': ' '{print $2}' )"
fi

The fortune files are stored in /usr/share/games/fortunes. The -e in my
script means "quoted from man fortune:

The -e option says to consider all files equal; thus

 fortune -e funny not-funny

is equivalent to

 fortune 50% funny 50% not-funny

HTH
