I currently have LILO installed on hda5. Is this my problem? Should I

MBR - Master Boot Record.
It depends on what you mean by "LILO installed on hda5". If you mean is
that you told the installer to install it thiere instead of hda durning
install, then that could be a problem. You can make it work that way,
but you have to use fdisk to mard that partition as "active" or "boot".
Normaly, the default value or installing it to hda or the MBR work fine.
You would install it to hda5 if you were going to use a different boot
loader to give you a menu at boot, and then use lilo if you are going to
goot Mandriva. (Something like System Commander.) This is usefull when
you have more then one Linux distribution, maybe OS/2, and Windows all
on the same machine.
One thing to keep in mind when doing an install - if you do not
understand what an option does, read the help, and unless you understand
what a change will do, accept the default. Most of the time, the default
will be the correct choice. The options are there to give greater
flexability when doing unusual installs. Most people do not need them.
(Don't pick expert mode if this is your first Linux install!)
