I just use growisofs:

$ growisofs -Z /dev/hdd=dvdimage.iso

You can put in more options but I think that's all that is needed.
growisofs is part of dvd+rw-tools. IME, it's better to use growisofs
than cdrecord for dvd writing. Cdrecord support for dvd writing is
somewhat iffy.

works like a treat for dvd+rw's - should work with other types as well,
but I've only done limited testing -- have had a nec dvd writer for
about a month now. I have experienced problems with some types of media
-- this 100pk of dvd+r's does not seem to want to work at all with the
drive, yet I got at least one or two to work with it, but all the
others return a media not formatted or supported error. Despite that,
I've got at least one from the pack to work with a brand-new Toshiba
dvd recorder I just purchased - even though the product literature
claims dvd+r is not supported. I have a feeling they're mislabeled
somehow - I can check that with dvd+rw-mediainfo (also part of dvd+rw
tools).
