Have you filled in the user information?
Ident isn't needed to use freenode, but it is on some IRC networks. And there
are a lot of IRC networks dedicated to different uses and with different
philosophies.
I am guessing you didn't fill in your user info correctly. Have you filled in
your nick choices, user name, and real name? You don't need real names for
the last two, but others will see them, so pick something reasonable.
If you are an IRC rookie, a Google search on IRC tutorials and what's going on
there will really help a lot.

Thanks, Rick. I had done some reading and got befuddled. I'll go
back and do some more.
But anyway... I'm on now. Between you and Stephen, I got it done.
Renamed ~/.xchat2 and started over. One problem was that someone was
already using my nickname (how dare he/she). Things are happy now.
Fortunately, I have been given many nicks---many of which I will not
share, in hopes that they will die.
