I have had the same problem on a VIA C3 CPU. The problem is reported as BUG
18603

If you follow the workaround listed and download libfb.so from 
http://people.mandriva.com/~gbeauchesne/i586/2006.0/xorg/libfb.so then it will 
work.

BTW: The best way to get the file is from the console
wget http://people.mandriva.com/~gbeauchesne/i586/2006.0/xorg/libfb.so
To download the file, then 
mv libfb.so /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/

then 
init 3  To make sure you are in run level 3 followed by
init 5
X should now start up.
