Thank you for the responses

Yes, I have tried turning camera off & on, booting with camera connected, plugging and unplugging usb cable.

MCC Services shows haldaemon and messagebus running,
 ps ax |grep udev
  946 ? S<s 0:00 udevd -d
urpmi shows gnome-volume-manager everything installed.

The following in syslog may help:

If you have any USB 1.1 ports on the machine, try plugging the camera into one and see if that helps. ALso, if you are using a HUB, try plugging the camera directly into the USB port on the computer, and not going through the HUB.

Two problems that I have run into are that some USB chip sets in devices report that they support USB 2.0 but will not operate at 2.0 speeds. The other is that some USB hubs do not work correctly with some cameras. The camera will work fine when plugged in direct, but not through the hub. If everyone followed the specs, this would not happen, but you run into it every so often in real life.
