Sounds like there is some very weird (probably spam-) mail in your inbox on the server. Mail protocols first read in the mails before they transport them to your machine. If the server you are connected to cannot handle the strange mail, it will choke on it. Asking your network people to inspect your mailbox is probably the only way, unless they can set up a mailserver that can handle strange things like this. Good luck!
