I actually use smart myself, as I'm working with a couple of others on the official documentation of smart. The best thing to say about smart is that it handles dependencies with a much better and more improved algorithm.
According to warly, smart will be default in 2007 though urpmi will still be available and maintained. Smart is only about 9 months old as we speak so it's still got some growing and maturing to do yet. By the time 2007 is released it will be very well matured by then. Also, niemeyer who used to work for Conectiva, and is the creator/maintainer of smart has an IRC channel on irc.freenode.net called #Smart You might should stop by and speak to him or a few others that are there and they can give you more in depth answers on anything you might need help with.
