Yes, I did refresh and arrange icons.  'icon assigned to this type of shortcut' I had no clue this needed to be done, I mean, it has worked before just by droping a link on the desktop.

Here are a few new findings:

If I go to configure desktop->Behavior->FileIcon->ShowHiden it now shows a plain text document called './directory' comprised by:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Directory
BgImage=
Icon=desktop
where to go from here? what to do next?
