You should open your firewall on Linux to samba service if you have one.
This was part of the problem. When I disabled the firewall completely -
turns out it didn't work to just allow Samba - a grouped named Mdkgrp
showed up on the Windows machines and I can now reach the Linux machine
from the Windows machines. I still don't see Windows machines from the
Linux machine though, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right place.
You can change the workgroup name in /etc/samba/smb.conf. Sometimes it
is easyer to skip the GUI, and edit the config file directly... You can
also configure the directories you want to share here.
For your printer run the Printer GUI from Mandriva control Centre. It
should find and configure the Windows printer.
Unfortunately running PrinterDrake and asking for it to "Auto-detect
printers connected to machines running Microsoft Windows" still results in
a "No printer found" message.
This may work better after the workgroup is changed to match the Windows
machines...
Is it perhaps necessary to first install a driver for the printer on the
Linux machine to enable it to detect such a printer on the Windows machine?
Detect the printer first. The GUI will take care of installing the
driver if it is supported by Linux. If it is not, then things get
complicated...
