Hi,
I installed VMware 5.0 for Linux, and it’s running
very well. My guest OS is WXP SP2. Nevertheless I
couldn’t install the printer (HP PSC 1210), which is
correctly installed and running in the host system. I
tried to install it using the wizard and choosing
Network printer, but I don’t know how to write the
printer name, so I get every time a message saying
that Windows can’t connect that printer, because its
name is wrong wrote. Could anybody help me?

Paúl,
Because the printer is working on the Linux system, it is indeed a
network printer as far as Windows running under VMware is concerned.
Depending on your setup, you probably have a couple of ways to access
the printer under XP. You can ether access it as a Windows printer using
Samba, as an IPP printer or you can access it as a lpd type printer
using CUPS.
To find the Samba share name, the easy way is to use Network
Neighborhood under windows and find the printer share name that way. You
can usually right click on the printer share, and pick the right option
there. (I don't have an XP system handy to check the name.) You can also
use smb4k under Linux to do the same thing. The name will be something
like \\host\PSC-1210.
I have not set up an IPP format printer, so you are on your own there.
All I know is that the printer name is in the format of
[EMAIL PROTECTED], so it would probably be something like
[EMAIL PROTECTED] where host is the Linux machine.
Setting up an LPD printer under XP is a bit harder, but it can be done.
I have done it a time or two for stand-alone pint servers. You need to
give it the IP address of the Linux box as seen by the XP system. (This
depends on your VMware settings.) The print queue name would be the CUPS
name for the printer.
Now, depending on your firewall setup, some or all of these may not
work. You may even find that the firewall blocks connections to the
VMware machine while allowing connections from the local network.
