Christopher: "not since I uninstalled Kat" what exactly is Kat and what would it have to do with web browsing or using privoxy?
Ricardo,
Kat is a desktop search engine that is installed by default in 2006. It has this habit of using 100% of the cpu. There have been some other discussions about this. The system was slow in general until I unistalled it. urpme kat as root. I think Kat will be very nice once they have worked out the bugs. For now, it seems better to leave it off of the system.

Thank you for the info. Where exactly to you set it not to start at boot time? I checked on MCC Services and is not listed as a service.
