If you want to be absolutely sure, open a shell and do the following:

su
cd /home
chown -R jrh.jrh jrh

That will recursively reset the ownership and group membership of all 
directories and files in your home directory.

But maybe something else entirely is wrong with kmail. Error messages can be 
misleading at times, depending on how well the app developers considered and 
handled all possible failure modes.
