I've noticed that some man page topics have a parenthesized number
following them. What is that?

The numbers in brackets simply point out to the reader the section number of the manual page this particular command resides in. The manual page has numerous sections.

Where:

section 1 is commands
section 2 is system calls
section 3 is library functions
section 4 is special files
section 5 is file formats
section 6 is games
section 7 is conventions and miscellany
section 8 is administration and privileged commands
section 9 is kernel interface

Some man pages appear in more then one section (e.g. read),
and man defaults to the lowest number section, so to get
a man page from a higher section you have to specify it in
the man command, e.g.: "man 2 read" to get the section 2 read
man page.

Also, if you do not specify a section number, you get the first one the man command finds. If you want to see the man pages for all the sections, use "man -a <topic>".
