What might damage the drive is low level format (which is done through bios config on older systems or through a utility provided by the hard drive manufacturer)...
I'm not sure on how this is working on Linux (I'm relatively newbie too), but I know that with the primitive OS (read doze here), the formatting only changes the type of each directory entry... even with a full format, it's possible to retrieve data using some specialized applications... -- +-----------------------------------------------------------+ Albert Charron, B.Sc.
