hello all,
thanks for the advice.
yes it allows to skip /home from formatting but it wont proceed until
i format / (root) partition as well.
and i chose ext2 because Mandriva by default issues this
filesystem.can i change their type now?i have 2 partitions,/,/usr and
swap.
please confirm me is there any difference in windows formatting and
linux formatting.as <http://formatting.as> it is commonly adviced to
not to format frequently (at least in windows) as it damages the
disk.in <http://disk.in> other words any linux equivalent to "format
\q" where actual format isnt done but just data is erased
completely,aka quick format.

Formatting a drive, in windows AND in all other operating system DOESN'T
damage it... What might damage the drive is low level format (which is
done through bios config on older systems or through a utility provided
by the hard drive manufacturer)...
I'm not sure on how this is working on Linux (I'm relatively newbie
too), but I know that with the primitive OS (read doze here), the
formatting only changes the type of each directory entry... even with a
full format, it's possible to retrieve data using some specialized
applications...
Linux is also doing a high-level format. As a matter of fact, unless
you do a check of bad blocks, it probably puts less ware on the
drive.
