Well, maybe the 64 is different, I don't know. But deleting the entire
plugins folder certainly will cause trouble. As far as I know there is no
special firefox for 64 bit systems ?

Here is my /usr/local/firefox/plugins folder :

[EMAIL PROTECTED] plugins]$ ll
total 2074
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root     856 Jan  7 17:02 flashplayer.xpt*
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root 2096844 Jan  7 17:02 libflashplayer.so*
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root      70 Jan  6 12:54 libjavaplugin_oji.so
-> /usr/lib/jdk-1.4.2_09/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so*
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root   19224 Nov 12 02:00 libnullplugin.so*
[EMAIL PROTECTED] plugins]$

If you still cannot get it working, try downloading the (slightly) newer jre
from Sun. They have a test page in the download section :

http://java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp

As you can see, they have a version for AMD64.
