What does the user's manual say an error 35 is? It could be that the modem needs a different init string. (Or a different saved default.)
One other thing I would try is to change the jack on the modem that the phone line plugs into. If the phone line is plugged into the wrong one, the modem will disconnect right after it connects because it has disconnected the jack the phone line was plugged into. You can not always trust the labels on the jacks - I have run into a few modems over the years that had the labels reversed.
