Google now has an IM service based on Jabber. Any Jabber client can
connect to the service. It is currently in beta and requires a gmail
account which is also in beta. Their terms of service and privacy
policies are IMHO pretty clear and easy to read (as easy as a legal
document can be). Another big plus is the fact that Google is open
source friendly. If anyone wants to try it out to see what its like
you can only sign up via an SMS text message on your cell phone (USA
only I think) or by e-mail invitation from another GMail user. I have
invites to hand out if anyone wants one. Just email me with the
subject of "GMail Invitation". I'm not trying to evangelize Google.
When I signed up it was out of curiosity and it seemed kinda cool. I
just like to try new things. So far I may stick with this account,
but I don't plan on moving all my email usage to this account. I'm
using it mostly for email lists like this one because of the insane
amount of space they offer. And as far as ads go, they are text only
and off to the side and out of my freakin way (unlike most freebies).
