hi All
I am attempting to make MySQL run for the first time on one of my computers.
I have installed:
mysql
mysql-administrator
mysql-client
mysql-shared
and all other MySQL packages I could find.
I have also installed knoda.
As root I switched to /usr/bin and ran ./mysql_install_db.
I then attempted to start MySQL by:
entering the command mysql
entering the command mysqladmin status
entering the command mysql_safe --user= myself &
For each of these commands I received "Unable to connect to mysql through
socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.soc'
I have checked in /var/lib/mysql and there is no socket present. Infact
according to another box I have running mysql there are several additional
files missing which I am assuming are not relevent. I believe them to be log
files et.
Any help I starting MySQL would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
these are exactly the same problems that I had when downloading mySQL to
Mandrake 10.0 . I have now instlled 2006 thanks to
excellent help from Kaj, (thanks a lot to Kaj) but I have not tried to
install mySQL yet under 2006..
I got the socket message, and morover, urpmi (which I used to install
mySQL) was wrecked.
Here is Larry's advice:
I think your perl is hosed. This same thing happened to me once - I was
running 10.1 with perl 5.8.5 and all was well, then when I was installing
something (I don't recall if it was Qt or KDE or mysql-devel) it upgraded my
perl to 5.8.7, and then urmpi failed with the same error you're getting. I was
never
able to fix this, and I ended up re-installing the entire system.
HTH,
-larry
Hope this points you in the right direction.
