Dear all
Well, Sympa doesn't like submissions via the gmane interface now,
either, so I have had to actually subscribe. See how long a new
subscription lasts?
I have just upgraded my machine to 2006, and as I have to use MYOB to
manage my accounts I have had to go about setting up win4lin. After
much trauma I have managed to build a 2.6.14 kernel with the win4lin
patch, and the netraverse installer recognises it (sighs of relief).
Oddly, when I log in to KDE (3.4) I can open a shell window, but there
is no prompt visible and it will not accept keyboard input. Likewise if
I try to run MCC from the menu, "su" doesn't work.
I can run the System Monitor and kdesud is shown running, together with
various sh- processes
I am not a CLI freak, but it comes in very handy for many tasks in
Linux. I know about Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc, but some things especially in
Win4lin need X access, and the only other alternative I have come up
with is a KDE root logon.
Any help to recover my shell access, please?
Russell
have you considered creating a new user to see if that user has a shell?
Thanks ET
Sorry I have been busy elsewhere. I tried your suggestion,
at what point do you get the errors?
but I am
afraid I still get "error creating child process" and attempts to run
MCC via the "run" dialogue give an "unable to find su process"
Regards
Russell

try this, reboot into run level 3 (when lilo offers the menu, hit esc
and type 'linux 3' (without the quotes) then log in as root, (and if you
get a prompt, then type mcc. then create a new user, when done there,
and out of the curses based MCC, and back to the root prompt and type
'init 5' (without the quotes) and try and login as the new user.
I am trying to decide if the problem is the user has no shell defined,
or if somehow bash needs to be reinstalled or configured.
