Seriously, I hadn't thought of that very obvious 101 solution. I always tend to try and think 'around' a linux problem these days and miss the blindingly obvious. Needlessly to say it worked. Thank you. Configuration is more or less intact, except for some ethernet and sound issues in KDE. Nev.
