I've had to entirely disable HAL, as it causes kernel panic just as X starts 
up. I haven't figured out why it does this (although the Ubuntu live disk 
does this to this machine, too). Disabling it through the system 
configuration tools did not quite work -- I had to go into /etc/rc to kill it 
off so that updating would not bring it back.

So, I have a functioning machine, but no USB reading. Is there some alternate 
system I can use to mount a USB card reader? 

Google yielded a number of similar stories, but no actual solutions. It seems 
that HAL is touchy but nothing can be done immediately.
