I've had to entirely disable HAL, as it causes kernel panic just as X starts up. I haven't figured out why it does this (although the Ubuntu live disk does this to this machine, too). Disabling it through the system configuration tools did not quite work -- I had to go into /etc/rc to kill it off so that updating would not bring it back.
So, I have a functioning machine, but no USB reading. Is there some alternate system I can use to mount a USB card reader? Google yielded a number of similar stories, but no actual solutions. It seems that HAL is touchy but nothing can be done immediately. Oliver ____________________________________________________ Want to buy your Pack or Services from Mandriva?
