This issue looks like the one i have after upgrading 2006 to KDE 3.5. And the automounting works, only the creation of the icons is not working anymore. You can solve it by a little trick i learned while SuSE did the same to me someday: - Insert the device (creates the mountpoint in fstab) - On your (KDE) desktop via a right-click you can 'add new link to a device' - Choose the proper one (USB mass storage device) - Give it a name you like and an icon you like - Choose the proper station/ mount point (this is read from your fstab file) Note the icon for 'unmounted' here" change it to you liking. The only issue i have with mandriva is that when the device is mounted i have to revisit this icon to add the icon for mounted so i shows the green mounted icon (on SuSE it did this automatically) - Finish with OK - Now you can mount/unmount by a (double)click or right-clicking on the device icon PS: before upgrading to KDE 3.5 the icons where there in the 'devices' icon on your desktop. In older versions of KDE they were created on your desktop, but also SuSE had to change to this icon (they named it 'my computer' - yuck!) when using automounting (hal/udev).
