With the diminishing numbers both here and on the Expert list, I
wonder if Mandriva should now consider dropping the somewhat
artificial distinction between 'Newbie' and 'Expert' by merging the
two lists into a single 'Users' list?
Many of us are on both lists anyway. Some very useful people seem to
be 'experts' on most subjects, and I hope that there will still be
occasional 'total newbies' who are trying Linux for the first time,
but most of the people on both of the lists who are reasonably
knowledgeable about some things are newbies at things they haven't
tried before.
Comments welcome!
The newbie list has become so quiet ( I don't belong to expert) that
merging seems logical to me, to keep users together. I suppose I have
some reservations that expert users may become frustrated at newbie-type
questions.
I am of the impression that very many* of the remaining members of
either list who are likely to share their opinions are on both lists.
I would offer that a great many of either of the lists remaining members
are wise enough to know that anyone that "knows it all" really just has
no idea how little they really know, and so are proud to consider
ourselves forever newbies. I know I consider myself proud to be a
forever newbie.
I do think there is a slight advantage to the folks using the archives
(which is what you get pointed to if you ask your question on a search
engine, instead of asking on an open list) to keep the lists separate,
and encourage folks with install type problems to ask on the newbie
lists, and folks with program specific configuration problems or
software bugs needing workarounds to ask on the expert lists.
If someone on either of these lists has a problem getting frustrated
helping someone, I will be happy to explain how to use the delete key in
what ever mail program they are using, and to encourage them to be aware
of the door that might hit them in the ass as they leave.
heck, most of the time, folks that have a near correct answer will rush
to offer it, just because you only get a couple of opinions for an
answer does not mean no one cares to answer, it usually means the
opinions already given were correct.
(*of course over 90% would mean all 9 of us on either list these days
<big one tooth redneck grin>)
