Start by checking if you have a recent version of Sane. Not sure if you're on
2006, but I know 10.1 shipped with an ancient version. Probably worth a try
to download & install the latest stable tarball.
I'm running 2006, so I would assume I have at least the latest *Mandriva*
version.
Then check the support status of your scanner on the sane web site. There
might be some debugging instructions there as well.
Ya, checked that. Says support is 'complete', which is why I'm stumped.
If all else fails, join the sane mailing list and ask for help there.

do you have the preview window open ? you may be scanning a preview or
to file. wqhick scanning mode do you have it set for? set the radio
button to view and make sure the preview window is open
