Did you, or anyone, ever see something on how to convert a regular mpeg file
into a DVD-mpeg file? I used to think an mpeg was an mpeg, but I discovered
that's not so. DVDs require special control info to be scattered through the
mpeg.

I was able to rip a DVD into avi files, remove some unnecessary stuff (e.g. 10
minutes of previews), and burn a copy. That way, I can keep the original for
backup (for when the kids inevitably scratch the disk beyond recognition),
and we don't have to wait for the previews to play before we can press play
and start the movie (and regardless of what MPAA will tell you, making backup
copies is fair use, protected under copyright law). Anyway, the tools that
turn the avi files into a DVD image know how to mangle the mpegs as needed.

But then I was trying to turn some mpegs from a video CD into a DVD, for an
older player that won't play video CDs, and couldn't make it work. I couldn't
find a tool to just take a regular mpeg and mangle it. I couldn't get them
converted into avi files, because the converter expected them to be already
mangled. After several hours googling, installing tools, experimenting, and
destroying blank disks, I gave up.
