Try this:
cdrecord -v driveropts=burnfree speed= [num] dev=[your burner] -dao image.iso
See 'man cdrecord' or Google 'cdrecord iso howto' ;-)

Funny, I forgot completely about that 'burning only as root' thing, never had a
problem yet burning as a regular user :-)
But then I'm pretty conservative with the speed= [num] part.

I had to add my account to the cd burner group before I could burn a cd under my account instead of root.
