You can fire up the Gnome Control Center and set the default mail
application in there. That should work, as far as I know.

You get set it yourself. In firefox type "about:config", then you get all the firefox configuration. In filter type "mailto" you may get four entries about mailto. Then you could set "network.protocol-handler.app.mailto" to your mail program. You may also need to set "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto" to "true" and the other two "false".
