The safest way is to turn off the machine and physically check
the jumper settings on each drive. They are little usually black
plastic squares that go over pairs of pins, usually on the front
side of the drive. Check them against the little chart on the
top of the hard drive. You will have to take them out to do
this. Another way is to read the bios output when you first
switch the machine on. The "checking ram message" and onwards,
shown on the screen. You can halt the process with the
"pause/break key temporarely to read or take notes. It should
say something like:
primary master hard drive maxtor fireball 120GB
primary slave hard drive seagate 60GB
secondary master philips DVD
secondary slave NONE
in a system that has 2 hard drives and a DVD. If you don't see
the bios out put just a company logo such as Emachines or Compaq
then let me know the manufacturer and I will try to tell you
which key combo you need to gain access to the screen or bios.
