I've been trying out PCLinuxOS on a second machine. For those who don't know 
the history, it forked off of Mandrake when it was at version 9.2. I think 
that was around the time they first lost their focus, which I suspect is what 
led to the fork.

It's a much smaller community that the Mandriva one, but a very friendly one 
also. The distro is not nearly as mature yet. But this is an opportunity to 
get in on the earlier stages of a distro and perhaps have some influence on 
the direction it takes. They certainly seem to welcome newcomers and their 
feedback. And their focus is specifically on the desktop, not servers or 
corporate environments or kitchen sinks. I think it's worth a look.
