Just downloaded Kubuntu, but that was merely a fortuitous
coincidence:
I wanted to see what a Debian-style distro was like. (K)ubuntu certainly looks like it has a strong community and clear moral principles, though.

For a strong community pclinuxos takes my money right now.
Seems to be on the "up" as a distro, and for new Linux users lots to recommend.

Update - it installed easily, though without the graphic pizzaz we're used to these days (it reminded me of the good old days of RedHat 5.*). I still can't get the hang of this weird attitude to root, though. Unless I dozed off, there was no way to set a root password during install, but if you try to do something requiring root permissions (which is most of what you'll be doing immediately after install) it asks for a password. I'll give it some more time, but my first impression is that this is one kooky distro.

After mandriva I found the root thing odd, and not desirable ( but relative newbie to Linux).

I heard - although never got round to trying it, that the initial root
password is the same as for the first user account created.

Yes that was my instructions and experience.

Let us know what you find, as I may be going to back to KU!

If you do not wish a man to do a thing, you had better get him to talk about
it; for the more men talk, the more likely they are to do nothing else.
