Robin,
Kubuntu expects you to use sudo with the user's passwd. I find this
irritating, so all I do is assign a password to root. Open a terminal and
type sudo su, and then simply type "passwd". Once root has a password, you
can log in or su normally.
If you go to the Ubuntu wiki page you'll find a whole elaborate justification
for this thing. Personally, I think it's a bit of a storm in a tea cup.
