Had the same problem with my new AMD_64. Turned out freshclamd and/or 
harddrake got in the way during shutdown.

I removed them as a service_at_boot time and my shutdown_hangs went away.
Take a look at what services are started at boot time and get rid of 
unnescesary ones. Harddrake for instance is only useful if you change 
hardware a lot. In most cases starting it when needed with "service harddrake 
start" (as root) is sufficient to see new hardware.

On top your machine'll boot faster too with less services at boot time.
