Had the same problem with my new AMD_64. Turned out freshclamd and/or harddrake got in the way during shutdown. I removed them as a service_at_boot time and my shutdown_hangs went away. Take a look at what services are started at boot time and get rid of unnescesary ones. Harddrake for instance is only useful if you change hardware a lot. In most cases starting it when needed with "service harddrake start" (as root) is sufficient to see new hardware.
