I had problems with harddrake on earlier versions of Mandriva after selective updates, including hangups of the kind you describe. These were sometimes solved for a while by rebooting (yikes!). There have been no problems with later versions on different architectures. All the problems with hotplugging USB devices simply went away with 10.1 and 2006. What do you mean about losing your home directory? If it is on a separate partition it should be safe, but you probably already know that (other distributions may not be so accommodating).
