Cooker is the on-going development version of Mandriva
Linux that is the basis of the official versions.

I installed libntfs, fuse, and ntfsprogs. I think that should
have been enough to mount my NTFS drive in read/write, but I 
haven't got it working (yet).

Okay, I got the new Knoppix, and --> YES <-- it safely uses NTFS
in read/write mode. Love it!
