Here's what I'm thinking, and maybe you guys could
tell me if it sounds sane or not. Perhaps I could
export all my photos from Digikam to CD, delete the
.thumbnails directory, then import the images back
into Digikam. Would that work or could that break a
few things? I'm just dreading going through 46GB of
images..
Hi Tango,

From all the messages I've read on this and what I understand
don't worry about the thumbnail images - you can safely delete
the lot - you won't affect your actual photos. So there is no need
to dread going through all 46GB's - the original photos should
be elsewhere. Just delete them. But before you do that, read on ...

**However**, 46GB's does sound massive to me - are you sure you
don't have *actual* photos in there too. A quick way to tell would
be get the size of the thumbnails - do something like

cd ~/.thumbnails

find . -iname "*.png" -exec ls -Sl {} \; | awk '{ print $5 }' | sort -nr | more

(that's -S followed by an ell not a 1)
On mine the average size of the thumbnails is about 21K (20000 sort of figures). If you have really large numbers (on the size of normal photos) then you might have photos in your thumbnails, and you'd need to move those (use nautilus and list by size and then move the very largest). If your numbers are all well below a normal photo size, then you just have ( an incredible number of ) thumbnails, in which
case just delete them. You have no need to go through them.
