played around a bit and found it's the -iname flag that loses the space_files, 
not xargs.
A simple " find . | grep -i  pattern " does find the files, and a lot quicker 
to boot. ;-) 
  
Yes and no. The version I gave was for scanning inside the files for the pattern
- yours is for finding the pattern amongst the file names themselves. Different
job, different solution :-) IMHO I don't consider find a sledgehammer - one of the
most useful functions next to grep.
