Hi,
I was going to try xfce but I can't find the proper rpm to get the
install started. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Go to SoS http://seerofsouls.com/rpm2006.html and add the Xfce urpmi
source, then use urpmi or rpmdrake (whichever you prefer) to install
whichever bits of Xfce you want.
Hi Margot,
Thanks for that. I managed to update my sources and install xfce.
When I log in from the opening Mandriva screen, I get the cute mouse and
hour glass but then just a blank Mandriva penguin looking to the stars
and no icons. There is no right click action either. I have to ctrl - alt
- backspace to get back to my login.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bill W.
Well, "no icons" is exactly what you SHOULD get with Xfce, so that's not
a problem, but the lack of a right-click menu suggests that you have
missed installing some packages.

Can you still access whatever desktop you were using before? (KDE?
Gnome?) If you can, have a look in rpmdrake, check which Xfce packages
are installed, and send me a list - I'll compare your list with what
I've got, and let you know what's missing.

Hi Margot,
I think my problem lies with the linkage from the login manager to xfce executable and components.
I am going over the faq and instructions on the xfce website.
I'll let you know how I make out.
On a side note.....is XFCE your preferred window manager?

Thanks for all your help....it sure pointed me in the right direction.

Bill W.

I use GDM for login - never had any luck with the others! And I use Xfce 99% of the time - KDE is installed, but I only use it when I'm trying to help other people who are having problems with it. To me, KDE & Gnome look (and operate) too much like a certain competing OS - I can't see the point of all those desktop icons.

In Xfce, I have panel icons for my most frequently used apps, the mini command line plugin on the panel for launching others when I can remember the commands, and the right-click menu for the rest - no more messing around minimising all my open apps or playing "hunt the icon".
