Hi Dan,

Yes, it's running Home... the standard Dell version, with the dreaded SP2.

I'll have a poke about with the other box, and see what I can come up with...... We can share files between machines no problem, so we are halfway there!

Cheers,

James

OK, James. That helps. SP2, eh? Oh! Joy!

In that case, check to see that the XP box's firewall isn't causing the problem. Try connecting to it's printer with the firewall disabled, if the firewall is running.

Also, check to see if 'Print Services for Unix' is installed under 'Other Network File and Print Services', which you'll find under 'Windows Components' of the 'Add/Remove Windows Components' section of 'Add/Remove Programs' in Control Panel (it's always simple to find stuff in Windows, huh? Grin!). It's possible that you may need it. Make sure to confirm that this new service is launching itself when the XP box reboots. Check that under Computer Management/Services and Applications/
Services.

One more wacky idea for ya James,...worse-case scenario, try moving the printer to a Linux box, enable Samba's print-sharing services and connect the XP box to the Linux box.

Basically that would reverse the network sharing of the printer, but if the printer is capable of working with Linux, this will prove that it does and simplify your print-sharing issues at the same time.

It's also possible that you don't have Linux drivers for that printer, so have a look at www.linuxprinting.org to confirm that the printer is supported.

Have fun!?
