OK. So Jan did a good thing and went out and brought me a new computer ~ A laptop with grunt and 100GB of hard drive with WinXPPro installed.

So where to from here ?

Obviously I'm looking at Mandriva for my Linux boot ~ but my lurking on the forums doesn't give me 100% confidence in putting together a personal workstation that I'll be using for projects and not as I do on my grunty old PIII ~ ie. experiment a lot.

Any thoughts anyone ?

Hey SnapafunFrank,

Long time no see on the list. Nice to know you're not pushing up the daisies!

Have you tried PCLinuxOS lately? Mandriva-based, pre-configured for a lot of things that you'd normally have to do by hand (browser plugins, 3D video, good printer & USB stuff, oodles of wireless stuff and a really good forum for support), installation of a full OS in 20 minutes or less, and the list goes on.

Have a look. It's based on a single LiveCD ISO which you can boot directly (without installing) and take for a test drive, which also allows you to install drivers on the fly. Then if it works for you, run the installer directly from the desktop.
