No particular need or budget. Pref AMD and (Watch me
puff up) I've been building boxes since there were boxes,
but thanks.

Just haven't been watching hardware lately, and I know
you all are on top of it.

Ok what do you prefer then? I will give you a few things to tell me:
Do you want the latest and greatest?
Are you budget minded somewhat?
Do you wanna try to cut back on power usage?
Will you want to overclock?

That'll give us a few ideas. All I can say is right now, you probably want dual core, and Intel has their new Core 2 Duo Conroes which have way more horsepower per clock than the X2 series from AMD. But AMD offers better options for power savings too. You can get a decent Conroe (6600 is a popular one), and overclock it nicely. The 3800+ X2 can overclock good with an appropriate motherboard.
