I'm building a new box myself, and like you, I'm not up on all the ins and outs of new hardware, so I'm playing it safe. I'm building a 3GHz (800HMz FSB) P4 box matched to two sticks of 400MHz 512MB DDR (1GB total). Got the CPU and thermaltake fan, memory, and spankin' motherboard for about $250. I'll cannibalize my other computers for everything else. Anyway, it'll be a big step up in performance for me (enough to play HL2), but I'm still firmly in 32-bit land where I can count on everything working right with Linux.
