Well there was a DOS version before the windows one. :-P Actually, I think if you do serious sailing you shouldn't realy use your navigation equipment for browsing the web or sending e-mails. M$ is OK on a beast with only a simple chore. I know there is a german firm that offered navigation equipment for inland waterways that came deliverd pre-installed on embedded LInux. No charts outside of Europe though and I can't remember the name. Very expensive, think $10,000 or more. There's quite an active mail list for "gpsdrive", maybe you cold pick up a few pointers there.
