About the second problem first, it's probably because the older source
is still configured, somewhere, as an update source.

The issue around paths is one that, really, Mandriva has no control over
except on their own site.  The other sites are free to do as they wish
with things and we often run into this with some sites when a new
release is coming out.  It's easy to blame Mandriva for this but I've
experienced the same thing with FC, Red Hat, the Ubutu clan and
others.  

It all boils down to you can't control what you don't own, I'm afraid.
