hi all,

This morning when I updated 'glibc' I got this:

2/10: glibc warning: /etc/localtime created
as /etc/localtime.rpmnew
warning: /etc/nsswitch.conf created as /etc/nsswitch.conf.rpmnew
#############################################
Restarting all the services of this run level

(followed by pages of shorewall reconfig and other services
stopping/starting messages prior to continuing install of updates)

Could someone enlighten me in layman terms what these warnings
imply/signify.

TIA

Some files that get updated are not overwritten just in case you have a glitch and need to go back to them. This is just telling you which file and what the old file was renamed. You can then delete the latest update and go back and remove the .rpmnew and have your old file back. This happens I think with only really critical files. HTH
